What is Super Smash Bros?

Super Smash Bros is not just a classic game but a popular series of platform fighting video games published by Nintendo and created by Masahiro Sakurai.

Unlike traditional fighting games (like Street Fighter or Tekken), where the goal is usually to drain an opponent's health bar until they are knocked out, Smash Bros. works differently:

  • Players control iconic video game characters and battle on stages.
  • The objective is to knock your opponents off the stage (and ideally off the screen) by launching them with attacks.

The game is based on a percentage system of damage. The more the damage, the more the knockback. This brilliant yet simple mechanic was the basis of the platform fighting genre and has continued to shape this genre even today.

How to Play

  • In each game, players are presented with a choice of a character such as Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Kirby and participate in a floating arena where they get platforms and hazards.
  • As characters are hit the percentage of damage begins at 0 and increases. The greater the percentage, the more they are launched by attacks - and it is easier to drive them flying.
  • Upon being knocked out of the stage, players can attempt to recover by using jumps, special moves as well as directional influence in order to reach a position of safety. This can be prevented by opponents' edge-guarding.
  • This gives rise to hectic, frantic, and strategic fights that seem more of a combination of platforming, brawling, and positioning than a classic fighter.
  • Modes as Classic, Training, Versus (up to four players) make the gameplay dynamic and repeatable.
  • The game is based on a percentage system of damage - the more the damage, the more the knockback. This brilliant yet simple mechanic was the basis of the platform fighting genre and has continued to shape this genre even today.

Getting Comfortable With the Controls

  • Arrow Keys – Move
  • J – Standard attacks
  • K – Special moves
  • Space – Grab
  • Q / E – Triggers
  • WASD – Additional movement input

Mastering movement—especially short hops and aerial timing—is essential since much of the combat happens in the air.

What Players Love About Super Smash Bros

  • Classic crossover line with such characters as Mario, Link, Pikachu and Kirby.
  • System of unique combat with the percentages and knockback rather than conventional health bars.
  • Rapid, hectic gameplay that ensures each game is unique.
  • Fun and simple-to-play mechanics, simple to pick up, but complex to master.
  • Multiplayer fun Local, great when playing with friends and parties.
  • Great replayability due to diverse stages, items, and play styles.

Smart Tips to Improve Faster

  • Advice From Experienced Players
  • Focus on positioning, not constant attacking
  • Use short jumps for safer aerial hits
  • Watch your damage and play defensively when needed
  • Recover unpredictably to avoid easy knockouts
  • Control the center stage to limit opponents

Even nowadays, Super Smash Bros remains an eternal multiplayer game where it is not the strongest lines or the most accurate moves but the reflexes that will make the difference in each game.
